Hallmarking Hallmarking

WHAT IS HALLMARKING?

HALLMARKING IS THE ACCURATE DETERMINATION AND OFFICIAL RECORDING OF THE PROPORTIONATE CONTENT OF PRECIOUS METALS LIKE GOLD, SILVER, PLATINUM ETC, BY A COMPETENT AGENCY . IN SHORT IT IS THE DETERMINATION OF FINENESS/PURITY OF PRECIOUS METAL ARTICLES/JEWELLERY BY A THIRD PARTY.

WHY IS HALLMARKING NEEDED IN TODAY’S SCENARIO?

PURE SILVER ALONE IS TOO SOFT TO BE USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING JEWELLERY, HENCE IT IS ALLOYED WITH A COMPARITIVELY SMALL PROPORTION OF SOME OTHER METAL TO PROVIDE SILVER STRENGTH AND DURABILITY.

THIS NECESSITY OF ALLOYING, HAS GIVEN A WAY TO TRADERS TO ADULTERATE PURITIES BEYOND REQUIRED LIMITS. HENCE, IN ORDER TO PREVENT SUCH FRADULENT ACTIVITIES, HALLMARKING AS A SYSTEM OF CONTROL IS REQUIRED.

THE PRINCIPLE OBJECTIVE OF HALLMARKING SCHEME ARE

  1. TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER AGAINST FRAUD OF ADULTERATION

  2. TO OBLIGE MANUFACTURES AND SELLERS TO MAINTAIN LEGAL STANDARD OF FINENESS

  3. TO HELP MAKE “ MADE IN INDIA” JEWELLERY COMPETITIVE , RENOWNED AND ACCEPTABLE IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET.

PROCEDURE FOR HALLMARKING?

THE SELLER DESIROUS OF HALLMARKED JEWELLERY NEED TO APPLY FOR A LICENSE TO BIS.

AFTER OBTAINING THE REQUISITE LICENSE, THE JEWELLER CAN GET THE JEWELLERY HALLMARKED FROM THE BIS AUTHORISED HALLMARKING CENTRES.
